On June 01, 2011 the Southwest University for Nationalities in Chengdu, China held the opening of the E. Gene Smith Library. The library opening coincided with the university’s 60th Anniversary celebration. Southwest University for Nationalities is located in the Sichuan province and has a strong Tibetology research program as well as a focus on minority education. Before E. Gene Smith passed away he chose to donate a significant portion of his personal collection of Tibetan texts, nearly 12,000 volumes, to the university through TBRC. TBRC’s Executive Director, Jeff Wallman, attended the library opening with a small party of TBRC representatives.

The following is a link to a few photos of the library opening from Lunchbox Communications.  Lunchbox is producing the forthcoming documentary entitled Digital Dharma that will be a testimony to the success of E. Gene Smith’s 50 year mission to preserve and make available Tibetan texts.
